Winter on the Downs follows the South Downs Way near Eastbourne, where chalky trails wind through rolling hills above the English Channel. Three distances — 50km with 1,233 metres of climbing, 88km with 2,170 metres, and 163km with 4,100 metres — trace the iconic long-distance path with its characteristic steep ascents and sweeping descents. December brings short daylight hours and potentially muddy, windswept conditions that suit experienced ultra runners. Between climbs, the route offers coastal views across the Channel and passes through historic Sussex villages. The terrain demands solid navigation skills and winter resilience, but rewards with the quiet beauty of the Downs in their most atmospheric season.
