Set on Madeira's rugged volcanic terrain, this backyard ultra turns the classic format into a formidable vertical challenge. Every hour, runners complete a 6.7km loop gaining significant elevation through subtropical forests and along dramatic Atlantic coastlines near Machico. The relentless hourly restart never allows respite, and the cumulative elevation climbs steeply — those reaching 180km face over 8,500 metres of gain. The island's steep technical trails and unpredictable weather add another dimension to the mental and physical test. This is among Europe's most demanding backyard ultras, suited only to runners experienced with both the format and sustained vertical effort.
