Azores Bravos Trail

The Azores Bravos Trail crosses Terceira Island from a volcanic black sand beach in Praia da Vitória to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Angra do Heroísmo. The 100km route follows ancient stone-carved cart tracks through the patchwork fields of Serra do Cume's volcanic crater, descends 330 concrete steps into Algar do Carvão — a rare volcanic chimney opening into the Earth's interior — and traverses the haunting Mistérios Negros lava fields from the 1761 eruption. The course winds through dense forests and cattle pastures across some of the Atlantic's most remote terrain. Four distances (15km, 35km, 51km, 100km) offer different ways to explore this geologically fascinating island, with the longest route climbing nearly 4,000 metres over its north-to-south crossing.
