The Athens Marathon follows the legendary route that Pheidippides ran in 490 BC, making it arguably the world's most historically significant marathon. The course starts in the coastal town of Marathon and finishes inside the marble Panathenaiko Stadium where the first modern Olympics were held. Between kilometres 10 and 31, runners face a long, steady climb that makes this one of the more demanding city marathons. Beyond the marathon distance, the event offers 5km and 10km road races that let runners of different levels experience a piece of this historic route. Held in early November when Athens enjoys mild autumn weather, the race attracts over 40,000 participants from around the globe.
