Ascona-Locarno

Set above Lake Maggiore in Switzerland's Italian-speaking Ticino region, this October event offers two mountain routes that climb steeply from the lakeside town of Locarno. The 24km course gains 1,271 metres through the surrounding hills, while the 42km option tackles a substantial 2,493 metres of elevation. Both routes wind through terrain where Mediterranean and Alpine landscapes meet, with sections of sustained climbing and technical descents. Late October brings crisp autumn air and the chance of golden foliage against the mountain backdrop, adding seasonal colour to the dramatic elevation profiles.
