The Shortest Day

The Shortest Day marks the winter solstice on Box Hill, a chalk ridge in Surrey's North Downs and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The 16-kilometre route climbs 708 metres through a landscape of rolling downland and ancient woodland, where bare winter trees open up sweeping views across the countryside. The intermediate course demands comfort with technical trails and sustained climbing. December brings a quieter side of this beloved landmark — the famous viewpoint and surrounding paths belong to trail runners rather than the summer crowds that usually fill them.
