The Gelderse Poort Ultra takes runners through the striking river landscapes where the Rhine and Waal meet near the German border. This 50-kilometre route explores one of the Netherlands' most ecologically rich areas, weaving through riverside forests, open floodplains, and rolling hills that deliver 700 metres of climbing—substantial for Dutch terrain. The varied landscape keeps things engaging throughout, from shaded woodland trails to open riverside paths with wide views across the floodplains. Late September timing brings autumn colours to the riverbanks and comfortable temperatures for the distance. A well-organized event that shows the Netherlands has more to offer trail runners than flat polders.
